Do you want to create a blog? Don’t need a blog, but you know that you want to easily and frequently edit and update your text and images? A WordPress powered CMS is the ideal solution for you.
"Hold on", I hear you say, "Isn't WordPress just a blog?" Simply put, No! WordPress is no longer just a blogging platform, it has evolved impressively in to a very powerful and customisable CMS in its own right, allowing for some pretty awesome web designs. The built in blog functionality is now better than ever allowing full implementation of lots of cool widgets and plugins to use alongside your social media tools like Twitter, Facebook and Google+ for a greater social marketing presence.
How does WordPress work?
To begin with, I will create a custom design for your site, and develop it in to a WordPress theme. A WordPress theme is a set of 'php files' that, when brought together, make up your website template.
Once WordPress is installed and everything has been setup, including incorporating the custom design that will match the rest of the web site – you have two options:-
- easiest for you...
- If you prefer to leave the development of the interior pages to me, I would be happy to do this for you – very similar to a static web site, in that I would add the text and relevant photos to each of the pages of the web site. However the added benefit to the WordPress driven web site is that in the future, you will be able to easily make changes to the text on each page yourself - without having to go through me.
- most cost effective...
- If budget is an issue, once development is complete, I can hand the site over to you so that you can create the individual pages through the WordPress administrative area yourself.
With WordPress, you are given access to the WordPress administrative area where you are able to create as many pages, categories or posts (along with a whole host of other features) as you would like, all from your web browser. There is no need for expensive web development software or specific design skills.
If there are multiple authors you would like to assign accounts to then this can be done as well so that multiple people can publish articles or pages on the web site without sharing login details.
For more advanced users, there is a 'code view' option where you can edit HTML code in a page, post or article, but it is not necessary for creating simple content. The WordPress admin area provides a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor, similar to a mini-version of Microsoft Word.
I can develop a custom WordPress theme based on the design that I create for you. Or if you are a designer, why not let me bring your design to life by converting it to a fully functional, custom WordPress theme.
WordPress Web Design - The SEO Benefits
Search Engine Friendly Permalinks
Permalinks are simply links or URLs to your WordPress posts and pages. When you generate a post or page in WordPress, a URL is immediately created. It may look something like this; blog/?p=123. WordPress gives you the opportunity to create 'pretty' URLs or permalinks. What this means is that instead of the standard database generated URLs, you can create descriptive, meaningful URLs, for instance; blog/this-is-a-pretty-url/. See how much nicer it looks than a bunch of random numbers and letters?
Pretty URLs are much more search engine friendly as you are able to include your targeted keywords and keyphrases. Just be careful not to over do it!
SEO Friendly Post and Page Titles
WordPress can be set up to automatically make the post or page titles a permalink. A keyword rich title utilised as a permalink to your website will make it simpler for you to achieve greater rankings in Google, along with other search engines, when people are searching for the products or services that you are offering.
Using WordPress Tags
Tags are very similar to labels. Tags are found at the end of a post on (most) WordPress blog sites and enable you to use keyword phrases to describe your post and what it is about. Tags or keywords can help the search engine web spiders better index your blog post, which actually aids in assisting people who are searching for that information to find your website.
Easy Content Cross-Linking
WordPress allows you to easily link associated content, or relevant pages, which helps with search engine optimisation. Cross-linking is where you create a link from one of your blog posts, or pages, to another relevant post or page on your website. Linking pages within your website in this natural way is seen as a plus in the eyes of Google.
This is another WordPress tool to help with your search engine optimisation.
Automatically Ping WordPress Posts
Each time you create a new post, or edit an existing post or blog page, your WordPress site can alert a range of different websites that you have new, or updated, content. This is known as pinging and it is another very valuable and resourceful aid that you can use to help your web site with getting ranked higher in the search engines.
Easily Setup Google Sitemaps
Google Sitemaps has two very important advantages for site owners. Not only can it help site visitors see an outline of exactly what pages they can find on your web site, but it helps Google to further index and rank your website by letting Google know exactly which blog pages are the most important, as well as being informed of newly created pages/posts.
There are a range of free Google Sitemap plugins available for WordPress and it is a fundamental part of setting up a WordPress website.
WordPress Content Categories
Categories enable you to automatically arrange the content on your website in a more manageable, and tidier fashion, making it easier for visitors to your website to find what they are looking for. If you have visited websites where you can easily choose a list of subjects or products based on type, that website has set up categories. Take eBay, for example, that is a prime example of a well organised, well structured, categorised website giving clear and concise information on where to find what you are looking for.
As you’ve probably guessed, search engines like it when website information is well organised and this will also help with the indexing of your website in the search engines.
Quick tip: Use keywords that your audience is searching for as category titles to make it easier for people to discover you.
